A good horse has a good saddle, and a good knife has a good sheath. There are many comments and knowledge about knives, but less about scabbards. So, how to choose the right scabbard? Today, I will list several common scabbards, make a comparative analysis, and check the advantages and disadvantages of various scabbards.

1. Sheath:

The leather sheath is our favorite hunting knife. Due to the rich variety of raw materials, the leather sheath is our most common sheath.

advantage:

Compared with other wood sheaths and K-sheaths, the greatest advantage of leather sheaths is their strong toughness, compression resistance, bending resistance and tensile resistance. For example, in the north of winter, the leather sheath will also maintain considerable elasticity and toughness.

In addition to this advantage, the leather sheath can also be made very beautifully, with style, and is also suitable for craft knives.

Disadvantages:

There are two main problems. One is that the abrasion resistance is slightly poor. When the knife comes in and out, it is very easy to scratch the sheath mouth, and the sheath surface is easy to be scratched by hard objects. In addition, the leather is also easy to wear and fade after long-term use, which affects the appearance.

The second disadvantage is that it is not easy to maintain, and it is afraid of exposure to the sun, humidity and other environments. For example, in the south, when it is wet, the leather sheath needs to be taken care of frequently.

Suitable for: knives of any length can be used.

2. K sheath:

The most outstanding advantages of the K sheath are: first, it is light and durable, and the structure is simple. It is generally unnecessary to use additional methods to fix the knife, such as snap fastener and velcro. Second, it is pressure resistant, wear-resistant, corrosion resistant and waterproof. Third, the raw materials are sufficient and the production process is simple.

Disadvantages mainly include:

First, the elasticity is poor. It is easy to harden and become brittle in cold weather. In extreme cases, it may even freeze with the blade.

Second, the scabbard is rigid. If the scabbard is tight, it is not very fast to enter and exit the blade. Besides, some poor K scabbards can not protect the blade, but will wear the blade or coating. Third, the color and style are slightly monotonous.

Suitable for: small straight, medium straight.

3. Wood sheath:

It is commonly seen in Japanese traditional cutters.

advantage:

First, the style is simple and unsophisticated. Second, it can protect the blade very well. Even if sand and stone enter the sheath, it will leak out from the opening at the bottom of the sheath and will not wear the blade. Third, no matter what the weather conditions, it can ensure that the knife can be put in and out very smoothly.

Disadvantages:

First, it has poor robustness, and second, it is very easy to corrode. Third, it is not easy to maintain, and it is afraid of dry and humid environment.

Suitable for: medium straight, large straight.

4. Nylon tactical sheath:

This is a favorite of military knives. It gives a very cool feeling. It is usually seen in tactical knives with a size of about 30cm.

advantage:

Nylon fiber material is light and durable; Second, good elasticity and wear resistance; Third, the carrying mode is diversified, which can be combined with other carrying devices in a modular way.

Disadvantages:

First, it is eye-catching. Second, if it is used by the civilian, the structure is slightly cumbersome and procrastinating; Third, it is easy to get dirty. The nylon sleeve is very easy to hang dust, and the surface and interior are very easy to accumulate dust and stains.

Suitable for: tactical knife.

Finally, a table clearly tells you the differences, advantages and disadvantages of various scabbards, so that you can choose the scabbard suitable for your knife:

In addition to the above materials, there are also all metal sheaths, which have different advantages and disadvantages.

Precautions for knife sheath maintenance:

1. Pay attention to keep the sheath clean, avoid entering fine sand or liquid, and prevent abrasion of the knife.

2. Do not expose the scabbard to the sun or place it in a damp environment. Maintain it regularly.

3. Ensure the stability of the sheath and avoid scratching the sheath mouth or the sheath body when entering the knife.
